چکیده

The Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) is a process-based, daily time-step, computer model that predicts soil erosion via simulation of the fundamental processes controlling wind erosion. WEPS can calculate soil movement, estimate plant damage, and predict PM-10 emissions when wind speeds exceed the erosion threshold. It also can provide the user with spatial information regarding soil flux, deposition, and loss from specific regions of a field over time. WEPS is intended for conservation planning, assessing wind erosion for USDA-NRCS's National Resources Inventory (NRI), and aiding the development of regional and national policy. WEPS modular design is amenable to incorporation of new features. Thus, WEPS will also be used for estimating long-term soil productivity, determining physical damage to crops, depositional loading of lakes and streams as well as estimate visibility reductions near airports and highways. WEPS will also aid in calculating both on-site and off-site economic costs of erosion and assess impacts of management strategies on public lands when used in conjunction with other models.

Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS): Overview

Introduction The Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) is a process-based, daily time-step model that simulates weather, field conditions, and erosion. WEPS development is in response to customer requests for improved wind erosion technology. It is intended to replace the predominately empirical Wind Erosion Equation (WEQ) (Woodruff and Siddoway, 1965) as a prediction tool for those who plan so...

Prediction of the vegetation management impacts on reduction of wind erosion risk in the southern parts of the Varamin Plain, Iran

Wind erosion is a major environmental issue affecting land resources and socio-economic settings in Iran. This paper outlines a study undertaken to provide a new tool to manage wind erosion from physical and economic perspectives. The southern part of the Varamin Plain in south of Tehran is used as a case study. The focus of this study is on exploring the economic and physical impacts of 16 veg...

Evaluation of Optimal Fuzzy Membership Function for Wind Speed Forecasting

In this paper, a new approach is proposed in order to select an optimal membership function for inputs of wind speed prediction system. Then using a fuzzy method and the stochastic characteristics of wind speed in the previous year, the wind speed modeling is performed and the wind speed for the future year will be predicted. In this proposed method, the average and the standard deviation of in...

Toward quantitative prediction of dust storms: an integrated wind erosion modelling system and its applications

In this paper, we present an integrated wind-erosion modelling system which couples a physically based wind-erosion scheme, a high-resolution atmospheric model and a dust-transport model with a geographic information database. This system can be used to determine the pattern and intensity of wind erosion, in particular, dust emission from the surface and dust concentration in the atmosphere. Th...

Evaluation of the Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) erosion submodel on cropland fields

This study represents part of a project by the Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystem Soil Erosion Network to validate wind erosion models. Soil loss measurements from 46 storm events from eroding fields in six states were compared to predictions from the Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) erosion submodel. The field data were collected from small (2.5 ha), circular, cropland fields with no...
